FAQ

How do I upload my music?
Tell us about your project here. We'll contact you with how you can upload your files directly from your browser. If your internet connection is slow, you can also mail your files.

What's your turnaround time?
To get our most up-to-date turnaround times, tell us about your project. For those on tight deadlines, rush turnaround is available.

Do I have to record in a professional studio to get a great sounding record?
It helps. But as artists big and small increasingly embrace the DIY approach, Fix Your Mix bridges the gap between the freedom of recording at home and the professionalism of working with a team of experienced audio engineers.

How can I be sure you'll be able to 'fix' my mix?
If we think your expectations are unrealistic (based on the recording or mix quality), we'll tell you. We'll also be happy to provide production tips to help you achieve the sound you want–just ask.

And remember: our mastering, mixing, and stem mixing services are 100% risk-free to try. You can hear a proof before you've paid anything.

What if I want something changed? How much does that cost?
We offer unlimited revisions for 30 days at no additional cost.

Don't most established artists attend their mixing and mastering sessions in person?
Not as often as you might think. Our method of sending files online and giving feedback via email and phone is quickly becoming the industry standard.

Who is Fix Your Mix?
Fix Your Mix was founded in 2006 by Keith Freund and Phil Hill. Over the years, we've worked with numerous ground-breaking, Grammy-winning, and multi-platinum artists. Some of our best known clients are Spoon, Blues Traveler, Yo-Yo Ma, ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of The Dead, Los Lobos, Voxtrot, and Academy Award-nominated director Richard Linklater (Waking Life, School of Rock, Dazed and Confused).

Fix Your Mix has since grown to include more engineers with their own studios. We also have a blog inspired by years of conversations geeking out about production, gear, songwriting, pop music, and the industry.

Where are you located? Is Fix Your Mix a recording studio?
New York City, Boston, and Nashville. You can also catch us in Atlanta, Austin, and Los Angeles from time to time. We're not one studio, we're a team of engineers and friends, with separate studios but a common mission of making great records. This arrangement allows us to offer quick turnaround time and the right engineer for every project.

Wouldn't this be easier if I just went to a local studio?
Even beyond the quality of our work, Fix Your Mix provides many distinct practical advantages over going to a local studio:

For one, rather than charging by the hour, we use flat rates and offer free revisions for 30 days. So unlike traditional recording studios, choosing Fix Your Mix means you don't have to make on-the-spot mix decisions in an unfamiliar environment. You can listen to your proofs anywhere you want, all you want, and if you want changes made it won't cost you another cent. You don't have to book the studio and engineer again; you don't have to worry about going over budget or running out of money.

And consider this: hourly rates can actually encourage studios and engineers to work slower, because the more time your project takes, the more money they make. While a world-class facility will not want to risk damaging its reputation in the long term to make a quick buck, this may not be a concern for some, depending on the philosophy of that particular engineer or studio manager.

With Fix Your Mix, faster turnaround time benefits everyone involved–less waiting for you and your fans, more time for us to take on more projects.

What formats do you accept for mixing?
Send WAV or AIF tracks for the fastest turnaround time. We also generally accept common session formats like Pro Tools, Logic, Digital Performer, Garage Band, etc. If we don't have the exact software or hardware you used to record, we will be happy to walk you through the conversion process.

Will you master from an MP3?
Maybe. The difference in quality is often noticeable, so it's worth bugging your engineer for a WAV or AIF file if possible. But we understand that sometimes session files get lost in the ether, so send us the file–we'll take a listen and determine whether or not we can work with it.

I'm a producer/engineer/label representative/studio owner/CD duplication plant/member of a film/video/animation team, etc. Can I still work with you?
Yes!

What payment methods do you accept?
Debit, credit card, PayPal, and Google Checkout.

Do you accept foreign currencies?
Yes. We accept most major currencies including Euros, Pounds, Australian Dollars, Canadian Dollars, Pesos and Yen.

What's the difference between mixing and mastering?

I'm interested in Stem Mixing. How should I group my stems?
We have common stem groupings listed on our stem mixing page. We'll also be happy to make suggestions based the instrumentation of your song(s). List this information at the bottom of your project submission form or shoot us an email.

Can I send more than 7 stems?
Yes, these projects are billed at our full mixing rate.

Can I purchase your add-on services without mixing?
Yes. Read more about our reamping service and drum sample triggering.
